1. Start With Your Usage, Not a Package

Pull out your last three Eskom or municipal bills and look at your kWh consumption per month. This single number determines everything: the size of your panels, your inverter capacity, and whether you need battery storage or not.
A 600kWh/month household has completely different needs to a 1,500kWh/month household. Any supplier quoting you a system without asking for your consumption figures first is guessing, and you're funding the guess.
2. Understand the Three System Types
Grid-Tied
Your system feeds directly into the municipal grid. Lower cost, no batteries, but you still lose power when the grid goes down. Best for areas with minimal load shedding or where SSEG feed-in credits are available.
Off-Grid
Complete independence from Eskom. Higher upfront cost, requires significant battery storage. Best for farms, remote properties, or anyone whose grid supply is genuinely unreliable.
Hybrid (the most popular choice)
Solar panels + battery storage + grid connection. You run on solar during the day, draw from batteries at night, and only pull from the grid when absolutely necessary. For most South African homes right now, this is the sweet spot.
3. Don't Cheap Out on the Inverter
If the solar panel is the engine, the inverter is the brain. It converts DC power from your panels into the AC power your home actually uses, and it manages everything from battery charging to grid switching.
Budget inverters fail. They fail during load shedding (when you need them most), they fail in extreme heat, and they're often not compatible with battery upgrades later. Invest in a reputable brand from the start. It will cost more upfront and significantly less over a decade.
4. Think About Batteries Carefully
Battery storage is where most homeowners either over-invest or under-invest.
The question to ask: what do I actually need to run during a blackout, and for how long?
If your answer is lights, Wi-Fi, a laptop, and phone charging, you need far less storage than someone running a full kitchen, security system, and home office simultaneously. Be honest about your non-negotiables and size your battery bank accordingly. You can always add capacity later with the right system design.
5. Compliance Is Non-Negotiable
Every solar installation in South Africa requires a Certificate of Compliance (C.O.C). This isn't red tape — it's the document that confirms your installation is electrically safe, legally compliant, and covered by your home insurance.
No C.O.C means no insurance cover in the event of an electrical fault. It also complicates property sales significantly. Always confirm your installer will issue one. If they hesitate, walk away.
6. Get the Right Installer, Not Just the Cheapest Quote
The solar industry in South Africa has grown fast, and not everyone keeping up with demand is qualified to do so. Before you commit, ask:
- Are they registered with the SSEG programme in your municipality?
- Do they issue a C.O.C on completion?
- What brands do they install, and why?
- What does their after-sales support look like?
The right installer will answer all of these without hesitation.
